#FRIDAY March 22nd

The gentlemen comprising the Brooklyn-based five-piece The Rad Trads distinguish themselves in ways few bands can. Already drawing lines around the block at home, the globe-trotting group’s singular take on rock n roll mixes punk rock energy, horn drenched soul, and jazz precision, all with a lighthearted but sincere delivery. It’s a sound and show that is gaining steam world over as The Rad Trads continue to tour in support of On Tap, out now from Hornblow Recordings.

+ The Harlequins "A 3-piece psych-rock/noise pop group from Cincinnati, OH est. 2007. We come raw, but clean up real nice too!"

++ DJ Paren & Chase of Naptown Soul Club to open with vinyl soul cuts.

Tonic Ball Presented by Eskenazi Health

*** Stay tuned. RSVP "Going" here to get the freshest updates. ***

Tonic Ball, presented by Eskenazi Health, is a celebration of local music. It’s a night of fun and excitement. And it’s all for a good cause.

Each year we pick five iconic bands and/or musicians, ask some of our favorite local performers to cover a few of their songs, sell tickets to the show, and give all the proceeds to our favorite charity: Second Helpings. That’s Tonic Ball in a nutshell.

Tonic takes place each year on the Friday before Thanksgiving at five Fountain Square venues: Radio Radio, Fountain Square Theatre Building, The White Rabbit Cabaret, HI-FI Indy and Pioneer Indy.

Gaelynn Lea

Thursday, November 8th, 2018
Doors @ 8 PM / Music @ 9 PM
$10 ADV / $15 DOS

Gaelynn Lea performs at Pioneer for Indianapolis Album Release Show on November 8th!

Violinist and songwriter Gaelynn Lea is coming to Pioneer on November 8th for an intimate concert featuring her unique takes on traditional fiddle tunes and haunting original songs. She making a stop in Indianapolis as a part of her album release tour for her newest recording, Learning How to Stay. This wheelchair accessible venue is ages 21+.

When Gaelynn Lea won NPR Music's Tiny Desk Contest in 2016, her two decades as a hardworking and talented Duluth musician finally crystallized in a beautiful moment of national recognition. It was also just the beginning of a grand adventure. With the wind of her award at their backs, Gaelynn and her husband Paul sold their house, quit their jobs, bought a van, and hit the road.

Since then, Gaelynn has played over 425 shows in 42 states and seven countries, adding nearly 100,000 miles to their Ford Econoline’s odometer. The singer-songwriter and violinist has graced the stage of renowned venues like Nashville’s Music City Roots, The Kennedy Center, House of Blues and even BBC World News. This June she was featured at arts festivals in both Iceland and Switzerland, and then went on to play Winnipeg Folk Fest in July, Travelers Rest Festival in August and Halifax Pop Explosion in October.
Yet somehow between this perpetual blitz of performances, Gaelynn also managed to release her third full-length album in September. Learning How To Stay is an 11-song collection that runs the gamut sonically from pensive and luscious to aggressive and intentioned, from folk to decidedly pop, and even includes a couple of traditional fiddle tunes. Undoubtedly the connecting thread of this album is Gaelynn Lea herself. With her singular voice and deeply-affecting violin, she guides the listener through a journey that explores the contrasting nature of existence: dark and light, birth and death, anger and forgiveness, sorrow and joy. Learning How to Stay encourages the listener to stay present for it all. “Learning How To Stay is Gaelynn Lea’s finest moment to date and shows a true artist developing right in front of our eyes.” (Simon Tucker, Louder Than War)

To celebrate the release of this new music, Gaelynn is playing at Pioneer in Indianapolis on November 8th. This venue is wheelchair accessible; please email management@gaelynnlea.com at least 24 hours in advance if accommodations are required and we will do our best to meet your needs. This show is ages 21+.

In addition to performing and recording, Gaelynn also loves to do public speaking engagements about disability awareness, accessibility in the arts, and living an enriching life. She has a congenital disability called Osteogenesis Imperfecta, or Brittle Bones Disease. Gaelynn is a strong voice in the disability community; she uses her music as a platform to advocate for people with disabilities and to promote positive social change.

Sarah Shook & The Disarmers (Chapel Hill, NC)
Inspired by artists such as the Sex Pistols, Elliott Smith and Hank Williams, Sarah sings with confidence, control, and, at times, a hint of menace. The Disarmers match her on every track, coloring the tales of resilience and empathy with as much urgency as ever as well as a broader sonic sweep. It’s easy to hear Sarah as a close cousin to artists like Hurray for the Riff Raff and Margo Price on the title track, or in the country-‘60s mod vibe on “Lesson.” “Good as Gold,” sporting a kiss-off line for the ages, “You’re as good as gold/ I’m as good as gone,” is both vulnerable and defiant, soaring with pop-inflected harmonies. And with an expansiveness evoking the wide-open West, “What it Takes” speaks to the truth of the record, to her life, and to the universe.

The Trongone Band (Richmond, VA)
Hailing from Richmond, VA, The Trongone Band is touring in support of their 2017 debut album, “Keys to the House”, released on Harmonized Records. With a sound that Paste Magazine likens to the “freak-outs of My Morning Jacket with the Muscle Shoals-inspired Leslie speakers and The Band’s narrative storytelling”, The Trongone Band is turning heads and making an impact on the Southern Rock ‘n’ Soul and Americana scenes.

Bat House
Bat House is a quartet of humans creating a shape shifting brand of psych rock. Growing from the gritty and colorful world of Boston’s music scene, the music they create pushes the envelope, shifting in and out of its psych-rock core by playing with jazz, punk, pop and electronic sounds. The band is a vessel for soundscapes that flow between complexity and minimalism. Witnessed live, their performances scoop you up and transport you to a different dimension -- where you are locked into the hypnotizing grooves radiating from each member of the band. Meeting in Boston during their college years, Emmet (Los Angeles), Alexandra (Las Vegas), Shane (St Petersburg, FL) & Kate (Indiana) all come from far reaches of the United States to bring uniquely different life experiences and influences to the musical process. Their debut ‘self-titled’ album was recorded entirely by the band in their cavernous basement turned DIY music venue/recording studio located right outside of Boston in Rat City (a.k.a. Allston, MA). Their latest EP is due out Fall 2018.
